Pequot Lakes- Hwy 371 North
October 8, 2004
Replace these three intersections with one full access intersection approximately 600 feet
north of Pow Wow Point Road;this is about midway between the full access intersections at
CR 107 South/CSAH 29 and CR 107 North/CR 168 (Mayo Lake Road).
Under this layout, the old TH 371 road would be the service road on the east side. A new
service road on the west side would need to be constructed as a part of this project north and
west of the existing wetland to connect this one new highway intersection to West Twin Lake
Drive.
As an alternative to the above, use the present plan and provide, as part of this project, an
access road from West Twin Lake Drive to the full access intersection at Olson Road.
Or as another alternative to the above two proposal, construct another full access at West
Twin Lake Drive.
8. As part of this project, cut down the width of old TH 371 south of Olson Road to about a 32-
foot overall width before turning it over to the City as a service road.
9. On the west side south of CR 168 (Mayo Lake Road), there are two right-in, right-out
accesses shown. These will encourage U-turns at the full access intersection south of these
`.. drives. Even with a wider median, and considering delivery and semi-trucks servicing these
properties, a U-turn is not a safe maneuver.
Thus,as part of this project,a service(backage)road or access to the existing roadway to the
west (Hurtig Road) should be seriously considered as part of these Trunk Highway
improvements instead of the right in- right out accesses.
CR 107 North/CR 168 - Derksen Road/Derksen Road Extended West { 1 mile }
10. On the east side, the dead end service road from CR 107 should be extended to Derksen
Road as part of this project and not'by others'.
The dead end proposed is against City ordinances on length of cul-de-sac roadways.
A connection to Derksen Road will also help the Trunk Highway safety and capacity by
providing alternate routes and several intersections for local traffic to use.It also provides an
alternate route for traffic that wants to go from TH 371 north to Breezy Point and minimize
the congestion of the TH 371/CSAH 11 intersection.
MnDOT, in one conversation, indicated they are looking at taking the cul-de-sac presently
shown on the north end of this road and eliminating it by bringing this service road back onto
TH 371 as a right-in/right-out intersection.
CAMy Documents\City CIerMHIGHWAY 371\Comments to MnDOT-100804-memo.doc
