Hwy 371 North
September 27, 2004
However, the City continues to hear from and talk to the property owners about possible
donations, etc. for a backage road instead of a frontage road.
Derksen Road/Derksen Road Extended West - Morehouse Drive 10.4 miles }
14. The City has reviewed placing casing pipes under TH 371 around the intersection with
Derksen Road in the past.
Not knowing the exact highway cross-section in this area, nor the depth of utilities, especially
sanitary sewer,it is difficult to estimate a cost for casings. However, using two 150 feet long
casings jacked under the roadway at $250 per foot comes out to $75,000 in City cost.
Depending on construction phasing and work zone traffic control,it may be possible to open
cut trench the casing pipes in,which would probably cut this cost to about$100 per foot for a
total of$30,000.
Considering the present unknown nature and timing of development in this area, the City will
most likely wait to see where development requires a crossing and jack casing pipes under
the highway at that time.
15. For the "existing" service road on the west side south of Pillsbury, please note that the City
never did accept this roadway construction that was put in by a developer/property owner.
The City cannot verify the structural integrity of this stretch of roadway(no cores have been
taken). Also, the width is less than that which MnDOT will construct south and north of here
(32-feet).
This service road will assist in local circulation and minimize local traffic having to use the
Trunk Highway system.
Thus,it appears, and the City requests, that upgrading this stretch should be included as part
of these Trunk Highway improvements' costs.
16. Even though there are very few accesses on the east side due to the Paul Bunyan Trail,
MnDOT must admit that they are counting on Old 371 in this stretch to be an eastern service
road for this TH 371 corridor.
The structural integrity and width of most of this stretch of Old 371 is less than that which
MnDOT will construct for their service roads as part of a Trunk Highway project.
This service road will assist in local circulation and minimize local traffic having to use the
Trunk Highway system.
CADocuments and SettingMdministratoALocal SettingATemporary Internet File§OLI(Momments for Council to consider sending to MnDOT
092704-memo.doc
