The sex offender meeting on Saturday went very well. The audience of about 150 gave us legislators a lot of information about the feelings of the community, and I think gave some a better idea as to how important this issue is. My heartfelt thanks goes out to all the legislators and Commissioner Joan Fabian and Deputy Commissioner Harley Nelson. If you were unable to attend the meeting and would like information on some of the facts and figures presented to us, please contact Mary and she will get you more information. . Thank you to Lisa Paxton, the Brainerd Chamber and all of the businessmen and women that attended the Eggs and Issues Forum on Monday. . I spent Tuesday in Walker. First I had an interesting conversation with a DNR representative about the idea of "conservation" fishing licenses. The idea would be to have a license that fisherman could purchase in which they would agree to only keep 1/2 the limit of fish that the state allows. This would have a different price structure than a "regular" license which a fisherman could keep the state allowable limit. This could prove to be a good concept in helping us to have a healthy fish population without undue regulations. . Then, I met with Cass County Commissioners. Among the many topics we discussed was .08 and its impact on counties, Ah Gwah Ching and the Regional jail. . I also heard a proposal for a Walker Area Community Center. What a great project! It would be a 53,000 sq. ft year-round facility that will house a youth center, a fitness center, a gymnasium with an elevated track, community meeting rooms, a catering kitchen and an arena. This community has raised well over$2 million dollars and is $600,000 short for grant money that has a deadline of May 1, 2004. On February 14th there will be a fund raiser for this project. A POLAR PLUNGE at the city park. Rep Howes and I will be there from 11am to 3 pm. • On Wednesday I was in Bemidji touring schools. I went on a tour of Horace May Elementary School with the SOS (Save Our Schools) parents. Transportation is a big issue. Our rural students spend many hours on the bus to and from school. Funding and class size are also an issue. We saw many innovative ideas in teaching! • Next I was introduced to the "middle school' concept at Bemidji Middle School. Being a product of a junior high school I was unaware of this great way of teaching. This is an impressive school. • Later we met with a Physical education group from BSU (Bemidji State University) and the Bemidji schools. At issue is the fact that the new education standards do not 01/26/2004
