Pequot Lakes-Hwy 371 North
July 19, 2005
For the purposes of estimating a cost to the City, we assumed 150 feet of casing pipe would
need to be installed (excavation of existing watermain, installation of a `split' casing pipe,
`welding' of the `split' casing pipe, and backfilling) at$150 per foot for a total of$22,500
in construction cost.
41. There is a City gravity sanitary sewer crossing under TH 371 at Sibley Street(the UBC
corner)that will possibly require a casing at the City's cost as part of this project.
MnDOT does not require non-pressure lines within their R/W to be inside casing pipes.
However, the line is in MnDOT's R/W by permit and if the highway construction impacts
the sanitary sewer in some way,the City will have to either encase it or relocate it at their
expense. This will not be known until final design.
Also, while there are no known problems with the condition of this sanitary sewer, if the
City wants to replace this line and/or have it inside a casing pipe to facilitate future
maintenance or replacement, during this construction project would be the time to do it. If
this is an approach that the City wants to pursue, they will need to do some investigation/
exploration(cost unknown)to determine whether it requires any work as well as answering
the question of whether they want it cased.
For the purposes of estimating a cost to the City,we assumed 150 feet of casing pipe would
need to be installed (excavation of existing sanitary sewer, installation of a `split' casing
pipe, `welding' of the `split' casing pipe, and backfilling) at $150 per foot for a total of
$22,500 in construction cost.
42. There is a City watermain in a casing pipe under TH 371 at Sibley Street(the UBC corner)
that will need to be extended at the City's cost as a part of this project.
This watermain was installed in 1999. Due to the unknown extent and timing of the
proposed TH 371 improvements at that time, the City only paid for enough casing pipe to
`cover' the existing highway.
The degree to which the existing casing pipe will need to be extended will need to be
determined during the design phase when MnDOT sets the highway's profile and
corresponding cross sections.
For the purposes of estimating a cost to the City, and not knowing the exact highway layout
at this time,we used 75 feet of additional casing pipe (excavation of existing watermain,
installation of a `split' casing pipe, `welding' of the `split' casing pipe, and backfilling) at
$150 per foot for a total of$11,250 in construction cost.
JAI30PQLAK\025-MnDOT TH371 ImprovementsNeetings\071905 Council Workshop update-memo.doc
