`.- From previous discussions, and with the time between now and the Contract's
beginning of construction right after Labor Day, we recall some comments about
wanting to maybe look at including some of the recommended improvements
from the study phase — e.g. decorative street lights.
After awarding the project, if the City Council wants us to look into this or other
items that were not part of the original scope of work, we can.
We would caution the Council though, that taking pieces out of the previous
overall study concept should be done very carefully, both from a cost perspective
as well as from an aesthetic perspective. Decorative street lights might be a
popular streetscape element, but if it is not part of and included within an overall
visual approach, they may look out of place. Also, without re-doing the width of
the sidewalks on the east side (and then probably the curb and gutter), street
light poles will probably not fit in appropriately along this side. Having them along
the west side would physically work, but they will not be able to cast appropriate
light all the way over to the east side. Also, depending on how many would be
needed, the City could easily spend over $100,000.
We will be available at the Council meeting Tuesday night to discuss as much of
this as the Council would like.
