City Council Minutes October 6, 2015 Page 3 of 8 The July-August 2015 Fire Chief Report and the September 2015 Operations Report were received by Council. 7.1 Benefit Level Increase Tom Nelson discussed the Fire Relief Association's request for a benefit level increase from $3,500 to $3,700 per year of service. This is a recommendation from the Fire Relief Board at their September 16, 2015 meeting. Mr. Nelson noted that their investments are projecting a $300,000 surplus which is two years of operating expenses. MAYOR SJOBLAD MOVED TO INCREASE THE FIRE RELIEF ASSOCIATION'S BENEFIT LEVEL FROM $3,500 TO$3,700. COUNCIL MEMBER LOUKOTA SECONDED THE MOTION. MOTION CARRIED 5- 0. 7.2. AFG Grant Tom Nelson informed the Council that the Fire Department was awarded an AFG Grant in the amount of$20,477 for operation and equipment in which we are obligated to a 5% match of$1,023. This Grant was submitted to purchase a commercial washing machine designed specifically for turnout gear and a cabinet dryer for both gear and fire hose. Council Member Karr questioned if existing electrical wiring will suffice for the new equipment. Tom Nelson noted that an electrician may be needed to install the washing machine in an existing bathroom and he will discuss this with the Building Committee. COUNCIL MEMBER AKERSON MOVED TO ACCEPT THE AFG GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $20,477 WITH A 5% CITY MATCH FOR A WASHING MACHINE AND CABINET DRYER. COUNCIL MEMBER KARR SECONDED THE MOTION. MOTION CARRIED 5-0. 7.3. Request to Hire Firefighters Tom Nelson noted that the Fire Department currently has 26 active firefighters and is requesting to hire three firefighters. Applicants were interviewed on September 26, 2015 and the Department would like to hire Jory Carlson, Casey Emans, and Erich Olson.
