Mark Hallan stated he had talked to Mn/DOT. Resorts, B & B's and churches were the
only uses allowed to have blue signs. Ruth Ann Hanson from the Chamber stated the
Chamber was not aware he had requested a blue sign; she will contact Mn/DOT. Mr.
Hallan had taken pictures of various blue signs that did not refer to resorts, B & B's or
churches.
Mr. Van Valkenburg does not own corner lot. It would be an off site sign. He would
need to purchase the lot. The Planning Commission stated a lot of signs have come
down. Mr. Van Valkenburg stated there are temporary signs, banners, on wheels, all up
and down the highway.
Ruth Ann Hanson: Sign ordinance is too restrictive along highway. Consider being
more lenient.
Jaculin Peterson—give the people a break. More signage needed.
Boat winterization: MPCA rules. Staff directed to get info.to John Derksen.
Mr. Hallan stated Mn/DOT is comparing him to a strip mall. Mr. Hallan suggested Mr.
Van Valkenburg make new application for a blue sign and to take pictures of other signs
and 300' separation distances and submit with application
Gary Peterson: Corner of 168 & Mayo Lake. Blue sign indicates there are resorts and
camping. There are no resorts on Mayo Lake and no camping. It is a very dangerous
corner. Need to signal it.
Planning Commission thanked Mr. Van Valkenburg for the nice buildings.
NEW BUSINESS:
a. John and Laurie Lopez, Shoreline Restoration
Mr. Marohn stated the East Twin Lake Association restoration grant recipient was John
and Laurie Lopez. Tom Adams, Jim Oraskovich, and Chuck Marohn met with them to
discuss the improvements to restore their shoreline. They now mow close to lake. They
would like to bring in some fill, do some light grading, do native plantings and some
rocks to knock down wave action. The City Council has waived the permit fees and
process. We intend to process this application. The 10 CY grading allowed would likely
be more than that. We are interpreting this as shoreline restoration and not as grading.
There will be a minimal amount of rock. It will be a nice model for the next round of
applications. Staff is comfortable, as well as the lake association. They will be
reimbursed afterwards. If work is not as they stated, the reimbursement would be
withheld. There was a 50 CY After The Fact permit a couple years ago. Consider this as
restoration, not grading. The Planning Commission had no objections, Staff directed to
proceed.
MINUTES 9
Pequot Lakes Planning Commission
August 21, 2008
