All members voted"aye". Motion carried.
ADDITIONS OR DELETIONS TO AGENDA: None.
Mr. Marohn stated that the Downtown Mixed Use discussion was moved to the
September Agenda at the request of the Retail Committee. Staff met with the Retail
Committee and they plan to attend the September meeting. The Chamber will notify the
business community.
OPEN FORUM:
a. Rob VanValkenburg—
He expressed his opinion how crippling to businesses on the highway our signage
ordinance is. 96 sq. ft. in a 55 mph area is too small. The elimination of temporary signs
ter=
is another death blow. He is trying to lease out one building. Consider the fact or take
into consideration these ordinances are very damaging. Some crafters actually walked
out when the banners were removed. He cannot get any visibility.
Buy/sell vendors—most want to be under the canopy. A couple of vendors work out of
their trailers and cannot be under the canopy. There were 19 vendors with 5 in the first
row parking on July 4th weekend, the largest weekend this year. There are 250 parking
spots with just a few vendors. The Planning Commission asked how many will be in the
parking lot. Mr. Van Valkenburg stated this past weekend there were 9 buy/sell vendors
and 8 were under canopy. He did not realize the first row parking was an issue. The
Planning Commission reminded him that having vendors on the parking spaces was not
part of CUP request. Mr. Van Valkenburg apologized. The Planning Commission stated
that the Sportsman's Show is being advertized and everyone set up all over the parking
lot. Whoever you rent space to should abide by CUP. We may want to relook at this
CUP and redefine activities or get a temporary permit for special events, and define to
utilize the property. 20%of Nisswa flea market has moved to his location.
Mr. Marohn stated we could amend CUP to allow, or modify, or review to accommodate
special events or needs. We tweaked parking requirements and got creative with
impervious coverage. Vendors are now using parking spaces. The parking is based on
peak events.
If you have it this fall, before I hear it on the radio next year, come in prior for a new
CUP or tell Big Mike no or have the vendors inside the structures. We want the event
indoors. The City is bound by the regulations. The City needs to enforce what was
approved. His tool to be able to do the things he wishes is to do CUP's.
What has been done with Mn/DOT for blue signs? Mr. Van Valkenburg stated he has
been denied. Their criteria was that the use had to be for over all good of the community.
MINUTES 8
Pequot Lakes Planning Commission
August 21, 2008
