Economic Development Commission Minutes <br />September 15, 2009 <br />Page 2 of 2 <br />------------------------------------------------------ - - - - -- <br />M <br />program. Sheila stated that BLADC is currently working with City of Brainerd with an <br />application for this program that would be used for sites in their industrial park. She <br />noted that the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development has <br />engaged John Rhodes' services for the State's Shovel Ready Site Certification program. <br />She further noted that John Rhodes is a consultant with Moran, Stahl & Boyer and he will <br />be visiting with community leaders in our area at the end of the month. <br />Future EDC Projects <br />Commissioner Jurchen requested Ruth Ann Hanson from the Chamber of <br />Commerce to give an update on summer activities. Ruth Ann indicated that there <br />were mixed response from businesses; the higher end businesses did well and <br />some businesses struggled. She indicated that the Chamber is still trying to <br />evaluate the reasons. She indicated that the Chamber wants to help businesses <br />understand the marketing aspect of their business. <br />Ruth Ann indicated that she has been requested by a few businesses to ask the <br />Commission their direction in terms of economic development. Patrick Smith <br />suggested that the EDC focus on health care and in working with the Council to <br />get the tools to attract these businesses. He suggested trying to establish a <br />revolving loan fund for businesses. He further stated that by encouraging <br />commercial growth, retail growth would follow. Cindy Rieck stated that in <br />conjunction with the health care focus, the City could use a medical supply store. <br />It was the suggestion of the EDC to invite a business -owner to speak to the EDC <br />from time -to -time. <br />6.
