City Council Minutes
November 14,2018
-----------------------------
Council Member Swanson questioned if blind intersection signs could be
placed along the Highway in this area.
Ken Hansen from MnDOT addressed the Council. Mr. Hansen noted that
the geometry of this area due to the lakes, swamp, and roadway curve
makes it a difficult alignment. He noted that the sight lines are not bad
enough to warrant the blind intersection signs; however, he would be
willing to place them in this area. Mr. Hansen explained that a pedestrian
waming sign would be dangerous to have in this area as it would give
pedestrians or bicyclists the illusion that traffic will stop.
Donald Snyder, County Road 29, Pequot Lakes, addressed the Council.
Mr. Snyder stated that MnDOT under-estimated the amount of traffic on
County Road 29 as it has become a feeder road for Pine Cone Lane and
Edna Lake Road to access Highway 371. He noted that this intersection
is dangerous, something needs to be done, and a flashing sign will not
suffice.
Maury Graham, 5988 North Sluetter Road, Pequot Lakes, addressed the
Council. Mr. Graham stated that his concem is motorists coming onto the
median from Wildemess Road do not know where to stop because the
median is too narrow and it is a disaster waiting to happen.
Council Member Loukota questioned if the tum lanes could be re-painted
immediately next to the traffic lanes to give the impression of having more ,
room.
Ken Hansen explained that due to the road curve in this area motorists I
would not be able to see around a vehicle in the tum lane. He noted that
there is currently a 6 foot median from curb to curb, a 2 foot gutter, a 12
foot tum lane, and a 12 '/2 foot buffer which is significant room to sit in the
median.
Mayor Adams noted the City would like MnDOT to look into this issue
further and would like a report back within the next month.
Council Member Pederson questioned at what point is there enough traffic
to do a major fix at this intersection.
Mr. Hansen noted that the analysis is not specifically based on traffic
count but rather crash history.
6.
