• Rentals are on weekends when Staff is not at work; .
• Calendars on the rental sites indicate the properry is not available, but this does
not indicate if the property is being rented or used by the properry owner or a
relative or friend;
Mr. Burslie would like to see if the Planning Commission and City Council would like to
pursue this type of ordinance or if you would like to keep the existing ordinance. This
will ultimately be the Council's decision to adopt a new ordinance. If the Council isn't
interested in amending the ordinance, the Planning Commission doesn't need to spend
time on this.
Planning Commission Member Leckband inquired if violation of short-term rentals
could be included in the Enforcement Policy to be discussed later in the meeting.
Bittner stated she would not like to see this included in that Enforcement Policy;they
are not the same type of issues.
Mr. Burslie stated the goal is to keep the discussion broad and see if we want to pursue
this type of ordinance, let the Council decide, and then get into those details. Mayor
Adams stated the Council will need more information before they can give direction to
move forward or not.
Planning Commission Member Birch stated he reviewed the White Paper which
included overwhelming information. The Lake Associations should understand that if it is becoming a '
problem, then we need to expand our ordinance and it will be complaint driven. Do
they want to keep track of how many times it is rented? i
Planning Commission Member Wilson stated renting your property like that is running
a business and is the ro e ro eri z '
p p rty p p y oned for a busmess and do they have a business
license?
Planning Commission Member Birch stated that irresponsible boaters are not always
the renters. Not all renters can afford the boats and/or jet skis. He also pointed out that ,
the Planning Commission and Council spent so much time allowing signs to bring I
people into our community,by having an ordinance restricting rentals will also reduce '
visitors to our community. He would like to see our current ordinance expanded and
enforceable, while being reasonable to both property owners and those who rent their
MINUTES 5 i
Pequot Lakes Planning Commission
June 2i, 2oi8
