4.3.0 Management Plan Template.doc
and in need of harvesting. Much of the birch has died and already fallen. The jack
pine is also over mature and in need of harvest. The Norway pine is mature but
healthy and should be left for aesthetics. Natural regeneration works well here and
should be used. The terrain is gently rolling with sandy loam soils. The
topography drains north into East Twin Lake.
Interaction with Surrounding Properties
The surrounding properties are private and similar in terrain and cover types. This
property has recently been annexed into the City of Pequot Lakes along with the
entire township. There are now restrictions as to timber harvesting on these
properties. Dennis has recently applied for rural status for his forty to allow for
timber management. It looks positive but is still in process. There are small farms
in the immediate area and this greatly helps increase the wildlife diversity and food
types. Most of the neighbors have cut their aspen over the last few decades leaving
a rich diversity of mature hardwoods and regenerating aspen. The surrounding
owners are mostly permanent residents and use their properties extensively during
the fall hunting seasons. The property has been partially surveyed along the south
line. The property to the south has been platted and developed into the Timber
Oaks Subdivision. Some of the property lines have old fence lines and Timberlane
Forestry ran these property lines and flagged with pink ribbon on 1/31/17. The
State recently expanded Hwy. 371 to the west taking about 4-5 acres of the
family's property. An occasional snowmobile will come across the property using
the power lines or road r-o-w, but this is a pretty minor intrusion. This area has
meandering wolf/coyote populations that are hard on the deer. There are no other
known easements, encumbrances and or encroachments on this property. Nothing
else significant was noted on the surrounding properties that are directly affecting
this property.
Stand Descriptions 4 types 40 acres
Type 1 2 acres Upland Grass
This type includes the power lines and road right of ways that run along the edges
of the ownership. The power company and the county keeps the right-of-ways
open, which is great for wildlife. It contains natural clover, grasses of brome and
sedges and willow, hazel and alder brush. These power lines provide diversity and
are a welcome open grass type in an area of mostly mature timber. The owners
could put a small food plot in the power line right-of-way. They also use the
power line for hunting and observing wildlife.
Management Recommendations;
Leave as is and continue keep open with periodic mowing. Continue to maintain
food plot. Wildlife food plot crops could be planted. Keep in mind that whatever
3
