b. Street Improvement Discussion:
Mr. Burslie explained the City Council's request for ideas for amenities to include in
their discussions to improve Old Highway 371, East Woodman Street, East Butler Street,
South Washington Avenue and the south portion of Government Drive. The Planning
Commission offered the following ideas:
North half of South Washington Avenue: Duplicate North Washington Avenue; a one-
way street may not work. Similar theme as North Washington, sidewalks, street lighting,
diagonal parking, 9 foot drive lanes.
South half of South Washington Avenue: Leave it as is. Topography is an issue and City
should wait to see what the traffic patterns are after the highway is completed.
Government Drive: Improvements should mirror the north half; include street lights.
Topography is an issue. Type of parking to be determined when traffic flow is
determined.
East Woodman Street: This could be a pedestrian connection;include street lighting
and sidewalk.
Old Highway 371: North segment should have parallel parking with street lights and
sidewalk.
Old Highway 371: South segment should have a sidewalk or path on the west side; no
street lighting.
General Comments:
• We need to see how traffic patterns change and how people use the streets to
grasp the needed improvements;
• There is a need for parking for vehicles with trailers; a trial area could be
established to ascertain how it is used;
• Sidewalks throughout this area should be a minimum on one side; as traffic
patterns are determined there may be a need for both sides of the street;
• A walking loop could be created by establishing a path/sidewalk down Old
Highway 371,turning at Rae Avenue and accessing the Paul Bunyan Trail going
north to Main Street;
• Low maintenance Class 5 trails could be used in place of sidewalks in some areas;
• Street lights should be used on the main streets and one block off;
• The same street lights should be used throughout the Downtown Mixed Use
Zone.
MINUTES
Pequot Lakes Planning Commission
January 19,2017 3
