Park Bench Memorial Plaques
Nancy Adams discussed with the Council the request to develop a
process for the placement of memorial plaques on City benches. Ms.
Adams noted the Park Commission researched a few options and
unanimously recommended to allow Community Action of Pequot Lakes
(CAPL) to be in charge of this program. CAPL will order and install each
plaque and provide ongoing maintenance and replacement as needed.
COUNCIL MEMBER LOUKOTA MOVED TO SUPPORT THE PARK
BENCH MEMORIAL PLAQUE PROGRAM WITH COMMUNITY ACTION
OF PEQUOT LAKES. COUNCIL MEMBER AKERSON SECONDED
THE MOTION. MOTION CARRIED 4-0.
9.1.B. Student Art in the Park
Nancy Adams informed the Council of a request received from the Pequot
Lakes High School art teacher to display student artwork in the
community. Ms. Adams noted the Park Commission unanimously
recommended the City work with the School Art Department to support the
student art in the park project during the summer of 2017 for the display of
artwork along the Trailside Park walking path between County Road 11
and East Sibley Street. Ms. Adams further noted the School Art
Department will be submitting a grant to cover all expenses related to this
project.
Council Member Pederson questioned whether the City has control over
the content of the art and if there was something displayed that is
considered offensive would the City be able to remove it. Ms. Adams
noted that she will discuss this concern with the art teacher.
Nancy Malecha requested that the Council consider requiring a waiver of
liability and/or hold harmless agreement be signed by students before
their artwork is displayed to remove liability from the City in case
vandalism, theft, or damage of the artwork were to occur. Ms. Malecha
noted the City Attorney recommends this as well.
