Pequot Lakes - Hwy 371 North
March 23, 2005
CR 107 North/CR 168 - Derksen Road/Derksen Road Extended West i 1 mile }
18. On the west side of the highway, the Committee initially asked MnDOT about the possibility
of the service road on the north side of CR 168(Mayo Lake Road)lining up with Hurtig Road
to form a four-legged intersection instead of two three-legged intersections not very far apart
(possible future conflicts for turning traffic between the two intersections).
To assist in the above, one suggestion was that the existing Hurtig Road be moved to the east
and the proposed service road be moved to the west to line up with each other.
These improvements should also be coordinated with any possible service/backage road or
access road mentioned in No. 17 above.
MnDOT said there might be R/W—remnant parcel issues involved in moving the proposed
service road on the north side any further to the west.
MnDOT also said that any realignment of the existing Hurtig Road would be the responsibility
of the City because it would have no direct benefit to Highway 371.
The Committee believes MnDOT should investigate the possibility of making a four-legged
intersection between the proposed service road on the north and the existing Hurtig Road on
the south. However, if this does not work out, there will be two three-legged intersections, as
the Committee does not see the realignment of Hurtig Road as a City priority at this point.
These roadways/issues will need input from and be coordinated with the County as this is
County Road 168.
19. For the service road on the west side of the highway, the City has been talking to the property
owners about possibly going with a backage road instead of the proposed frontage road. The
City has also inquired Region 5 about potential funding assistance.
MnDOT has stated that they could possibly credit the City the cost difference between the
backage road and frontage road concepts. This is estimated to be about $100,000 and
represents the cost of frontage road curb and gutter that would not be needed for the backage
road construction.
However, the City also understands that they would be responsible for paying for both R/W(no
estimate available) and business "re-orientation" costs (a very rough approximation by
MnDOT's R/W people being estimated at$550,000 to $600,000).
MnDOT will be working up a backage road alignment so the City can be working on acquiring
R/W.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\L.ocal Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKB\032305 Council Workshop update-memo.doc
