Pequot Lakes- Hwy 371 North
October 8, 2004
eliminate the offset intersection of Old 371/CR 112 from the County's State Aid Highway
System.
29. The present speed limit on TH 371 within a portion of the `urban core' through town is 35
mph.
The City wants to work with MnDOT on keeping this same speed via the use of minimal shy
distances, minimal shoulders, aesthetics, and other means that still provides for a safe
roadway.
30. With the one projected traffic light at CSAH I1/Main Street, it appears this is the only
designated pedestrian crossing. With these improvements, the issue of providing for multiple
points(tunnels, bridges,or other means)for pedestrian/school children crossing was brought
up. The City would like to work with MnDOT on this.
31. The City would like to have further discussions with MnDOT on aesthetics, lighting,
stamped concrete(cobblestone)medians, sidewalks maybe on both sides(set back 6' to 8',
meandering),etc. through the `downtown urban core' stretch. The Paul Bunyan trail cannot
be used for pedestrian traffic due to snowmobiles in the winter.
32. The City is aware that is has a watermain crossing under TH 371 at Main Street/CSAH 11
that will (possibly)require a casing at the City's cost as part of this project.
As this watermain is shown on old plans(1960's vintage),its condition and whether or not it
is even in a casing pipe is unknown. The City will have to do some investigation/exploration
(cost unknown)to determine the answers to these questions.
For the purposes of estimating a cost to the City, I will assume 150 feet of casing pipe
will need to be installed(excavation of existing watermain, installation of a `split' casing
pipe, `welding' of the `split' casing pipe, and backfilling) at $150 per foot for a total of
$22,500.
33. The City is aware that is has a gravity sanitary sewer crossing under TH 371 at Sibley Street
(the UBC corner)that will possibly require a casing at the City's cost as part of this project.
We understand that MnDOT does not require non-pressure lines within their R/W to be
inside casing pipes. However, if the City wants to replace this line and/or have it inside a
casing pipe to facilitate future maintenance or replacement, now would be the time to do
SO.
There are no known problems with the condition of this sanitary sewer. However, the
City should do some investigation/exploration (cost unknown) to determine whether it
requires any work as well as answering the question of whether they want it cased.
CAMy DocumentsiCity ClerMIGHWAY 371\Comments to MnDOT-100804-memo.doc
