c. The Chamber asked if it would be more efficient for the Chamber to accept
total responsibility for the maintenance and potential demolition of the
building.
d. This issue will be on the City Council agenda Nov. 9th. Sandy will provide
chamber staff with details and hopefully a volunteer leader and/or staff could
attend that meeting.
4. Donated sign from Shaeffers
a. Chamber spent $1400 to bring lights to the sign
b. Who is responsible for the sign? At the meeting, the Chamber agreed to accept
ownership and responsibility for the sign. The city agreed to follow-through
with the landscaping promised around the sign. Ryan recommended that the
city place some barriers around the lights if the landscaping isn't complete this
year, because snowmobiles may knock over the lights.
c. Insurance, maintenance: The Chamber agreed to accept responsibility.
d. Changing the letters on the sign? Setting criteria for use? The Chamber will
establish criteria for the use of the sign—Chamber events first, community
activities second.
Note: Following the meeting, Sandy called Lisa Paxton and said that Mr. Shaeffer
met with Cathy Malecha and stated that the sign was to be owned by the city and
to be used only to promote community events in Pequot Lakes. Lisa recommends
that volunteer leaders meet with Mr. Shaeffer to resolve this issue, and this issue
will be placed on the agenda of the Advisory Committee.
General discussion: Those present talked about the need for a plan for a public
park area in the downtown area after the new four-lanes are constructed. The new
highway will remove a significant amount of land from the Chamber building and
the green space now owned by the DNR south of County Road 11. It was
suggested that a joint city/chamber task force be formed as part of the parks board
to determine green space options to keep the business district aesthetically
pleasing and allow for large public gatherings.
