MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: The Health Insurance Committee
DATE: July 6, 2004
SUBJECT: Health Insurance
Due to the rising costs in health insurance, the health insurance committee has been
looking at all aspects of health insurance. Listed below are the issues we have been
discussing.
Premiums
Because of the high increase in premiums, the committee thought it prudent to
check other insurance companies to see if the BCBS rates are comparable. The
committee checked with three other companies, Federated, Health Partners and
Preferred One. The rates were higher than BCBS.
Plan Year
The committee is contemplating having the insurance year coincide with the budget
calendar year from January to December.
Plan Type
The City currently has an age based plan. The committee and employees are
recommending going with a Single/Family plan which would be less expensive for
most employees currently on the plan.
City Contribution to the Plan
Currently the City pays $375.00 toward the insurance plan. If an individual does not
take the plan, they receive the $375 on their pay check.
After checking with neighboring cities (Breezy Point,Nisswa, Lakeshore, Crosslake,
Fifty Lakes),the norm was to pay a percentage of the premium from 80% to 100%
with the exception of Nisswa who pays $750 for family and $275 for single.
