PEQUOT LAKES FIRE DEPARTMENT
MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 2, 2005 MEETING
The monthly meeting of the PLFD was called to order by Chief Nelson, 24 members
were present. Before the meeting began, Captain Neil Casanova presented a class on
winter fire fighting. He stressed to take extra time when responding to a call and wear
proper warm clothing, such as coveralls, gloves, shirts, and socks. The pump heaters
should be turned on before leaving the station on cold days. All valve drains need to be
closed before leaving the station. Before leaving a scene, make sure to open all drains so
lines do not freeze. Water splashing near a tanker or pump truck can freeze and be
extremely slippery. Also icy boots can slip off brake or accelerator pedals, so extra
caution should be taken. If you are not using a charged hose line, make sure to let the
nozzle trickle, so it does not freeze. There is a torch on the van if a freeze occurs. If you
need to thaw something that is movable, using the vehicle exhaust is a possibility. Fire
coats and gloves can freeze if they get wet. It is better to stay out in the cold if you can,
rather than entering a warm area and having the gear thaw and freeze again. Icy gloves
can cause bad grips on things. If you have to climb on trucks or other things, be careful of
slippery surfaces. Roads can be very slippery at any time during winter conditions.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved by a motion by Oaks, second by
Rickard, motion passed.
-' Truck checks were discussed.
