June 7,2005
Pequot Lakes city council
Mayor Cathy Malecha
RE: Meeting held on May 19,2005
Dear Mayor Malecha and city council members:
A meeting was held in May with council member Tom Ryan,Mayor Cathy Malecha,City clerk Sandy Peine
and Brett Twardy to discuss sewer issues.
Jetting the cities sewer main was discussed and the following items were reviewed:
The cities sewer main is approximately 29,800 feet total in length. That the sewer will be jetted between 8-
16 hours per week if possible. The average jetting length is estimated to be 800 feet per day and that we
should be able to jet 1,600 feet per week for 16 weeks which will allow the city to jet approximately 25,600
feet of the cities sewer system, which is about 85%of the cities sewer system.Of course there are many
variables to this situation, such as ability to get into back yards of many city lines to jet. Also the amount of
debris in the lines determines the Amount of time spent on each jetting section. The amount of grit in line is
also a concern as how to get into the sewer main,as the city does not have the man power or the proper
equipment to do confined space entry. In conclusion of this topic, the city sewer dept will do its best to
clean the entire sewer system this year
Another item discussed was to map out the entire sewer main system. Then to section off areas in categories
to determine the need to replace, repair, extend sewer lines on a schedule for the city council to act upon as
a monitary item.I am currently working with the billing clerk Janet to section off the cities sewer system in
areas of priorities so we can come up with some estimates of the costs involved to start replacing the old
clay file sewer mains. They are getting very old and problematic and need to be replaced a little at a time so
we can budget or finance for this major improvement to our sewer system.
I hope to have all the information regarding this sewer issue mapped and approximate cost estimates within
the next several months.
Thank You,
Brett Twardy
Water/wastewater Supt.
