Box 668 Brainerd, Minnesota 56401 GME Project No. 11737 RE: Comments on hydrogeologic conditions at the proposed aggregate resource site in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota Dear Mr. Wickham: You provided us with the November 17, 2005 minutes of the Pequot Lakes Planning and Zoning Commission's (the Commission) meeting. According to those notes, you were denied a Conditional Use Permit for Extractive Use (i.e., gravel mining) based in part on public concerns regarding hydrogeologic conditions and the potential for contamination from mining operations. You requested that we assist you in answering some of the hydrogeologic questions raised by the Commission and the public, and attend the next meeting with the Pequot Lakes City Council scheduled for January 11, 2006 Project Location The site is part of a 174-acre parcel located south of the City of Pequot Lakes. The part of this parcel that is planned for mining covers approximately 38 acres, as shown on the attached Regional Location Diagram; we refer to this 38-acre part of the parcel as "the Property." The Property is located approximately 1.5 miles south of Pequot Lakes City limits, in Section 27 of Township 136 North, Range 29 West, in Sibley Township, Crow Wing County. Regional Hydroc>leology We have reviewed parts of the published sources describing the regional hydrogeology near of the Property. These sources included the USGS Hydrologic Investigations Atlas HA-380 'Water Resources of the Crow Wing River Watershed, Central Minnesota" (Lindholm et.al., 1972) and the Minnesota County Well Index (CWI) distributed by the Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS). Atlas HA-380 provides a general description of the regional geology and groundwater, and the CWI is a database system containing well information, most of which were drilled since 1974. CWI does not contain all wells drilled in Minnesota; the MGS estimates that it lists about 10 percent of the wells drilled in Minnesota (http://www.geo.umn.edu/mqs/cwifaci.htmi). WILLIAM C.
