SPECIAL MEETING OF THE PEQUOT LAKES CITY COUNCIL
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2006
PEQUOT LAKES CITY HALL
Members Present: Mayor C. Malecha, Council Members Bolz-Andolshek,
Oraskovich, Pfeiffer, Nagel, Sjoblad, and Ryan
Staff Present: Sandra Peine, City Clerk; Mike Loven, Street
Superintendent; Brett Twardy, Water/Wastewater
Superintendent; Jerry Braam, Chief of Police; Tim Houle and
Mike Rude, City Engineers
Also Present: Herschel Blasing and Brad Nordberg from the MPCA
1. Call Meeting to Order
Mayor Malecha called the meeting together and led with the Pledge of
Allegiance
2. MPCA— SPRAY IRRIGATION FIELDS
Representatives of the MPCA were present to discuss the affect on the
City's spray irrigation land if the City lost 17 acres of the land due to the
highway going around town. Mayor Malecha discussed past problems
regarding high nitrates. MPCA indicated that the levels of nitrates have
come down considerably. Mayor Malecha questioned if the area would be
safe to extend the business park and for the future roadway if the decision
is made to have the road go around town. MPCA indicated that they had
no concerns with the property in regard to the spray irrigation.
Council Member Sjoblad questioned whether the amount of land the City
has is sufficient for the future and also whether the City should be looking
at a different type of treatment such as rapid infiltration. Brad Nordberg of
MPCA indicated that at this time the existing type of treatment is still being
used and considered an appropriate treatment. He also noted that rapid
infiltration basins would be considerably smaller than the existing
treatment; however, the engineer would have to determine if the soils are
suitable. Council Member Sjoblad questioned the process if the City
needed additional land for treatment. Herschel Blasing indicated that first
the land would have to be evaluated to see if it was suited for wastewater
and if so, the permit would have to be modified.
