It has come to our attention that there is a shared septic system
next door for the old Methodist Church (Devine Cafe), Just Your
Style Salon (former bakery) and the house behind. There are 2
parcels involved. Each parcel received a Certificate of Compliance
when purchased in 2004 and 2005. The changes in use triggered
our concern that this septic system could fail. It is within our
Wellhead Protection area and there are wells in the area.
Brett and I met with a consultant who gave us great information,
but it would be very costly for the property owners. A grease trap
would need to be installed at the Cafe and install another 1350
tank. The existing system would need to be verified for the Salon
and house. If this system was compliant, a holding tank would
need to be installed, requiring regular pumping and maintenance.
(Chemicals from the Salon cannot go into the septic tank or
drainfield.) Existing wells would need to be tested for coliform
and nitrates.
We have discussed municipal sewer as an alternative. Sanitary
sewer could be extended from County Road 112, behind Country
Corner, up to the Salon. This would include hooking up Country
Corner, Preferred Property building, Devine Cafe, the house and
the Salon. The City could also benefit by hooking up to this
sanitary sewer extension. The drainfield in front of City Hall could
be abandoned.
We are requesting permission to move ahead with the feasibility
study.
Sincerely,
Brett and Dawn
