July 3, 2007
To: City Council of Pequot Lakes
From: Pequot Lakes Community Library Board
Re: Proposed Expansion of Library Space
The Library has grown beyond anyone's expectations. We are requesting that it be added
to the City's Long Range Plan for expansion and support in order to better serve the
community.
Background:
1. The Library opened on July 2,2004, with the help of a group of volunteers who raised
all funds for its implementation and support;this continues at the present time. The
City provides 1,850 square feet of space(.7%)in the building for the Library.
2. 1,510 library cards, either family or individual, have been issued: the majority are
from Pequot Lakes and Breezy Point, with other local communities well represented.
3. Usage of the Library has grown consistently in the three years the Library has been
open. From the Library Reports you receive each month,we know that:
A. For August,2004,there were an average of 36 patrons per day
B. For May, 2007,there were an average of 45 patrons per day
C. For June, 2007,there were an average of 65 patrons per day. This substantial jump
in attendance reflects summer usage at the library.
4. When the Library opened, there were approximately 15,000 materials;there are now
just over 18,000 materials.
5. When the Library opened, there were 52 shelving units; 17 units have been added, for
a total of 69 units in the same space. It is VERY crowded.
6. When the Library opened, there were three computers available to the public; we now
have four and, during the summer, we definitely could use more. Although we have
two additional computers available, there is no space. It is important to note,
however, that, even in the summer, usage of the computers is only a small percent of
overall Library activity.
7. The Library provides programs for the community.
A. First Thursday Book Group—a book discussion group for adults that meets
monthly under the leadership of Joni Anderson of Breezy Point. There are now 9
consistent attendees and growing.
B. Summer Reading Program for Children—2006 was the first year of this program.
