• Commercial businesses weren't looked at in residential zones when current
ordinance was written.
• A 4' X 4' two-sided sign may be large enough.
• Discontinue counting both sides; determine a square footage that is adequate or
reasonable.
• Residential areas are places to live and should be kept in mind when increasing
square footage.
• Rural Residential lots are larger and usually have higher speed zones.
• 55 mph speed zones should have same consideration given as in the commercial
area, with reasonable limits.
• There could be different scales considering the zoning and speed limit.
• Certain types of businesses need off-site signage for direction.
• Use a 7-word guideline for content; less is more.
• Allow up to 32 square feet; 16 sf for two-sided or 32 sf for one-sided.
• Allow signage on accessory structures; 10% or 15% depending on setback from
roadway.
• Sensible guidelines will deter CUP requests for additional signage.
• County State Aid Highways (CSAH's)have a greater setback, larger right-of-
way; need larger sign area than a regular county road. Could use that instead of
the zoning to determine the ordinance.
• Do not limit accessory structures for the placement of signs. Allow one 10% sign
on building, either primary or accessory.
Staff was directed to advertise the meeting for next month.
b.
