What are the most important factors in making this point?
• Grow the commercial tax base to minimize the tax burden on residential
properties. (2)
• Minimize the tax burden on commercial so that people will relocate here!
• Business can't support the tax base, they are over taxed now. (2)
• Reverse whatever conditions have led to the deterioration of the tax base in the
downtown area.
• Maximize use of industrial park.
• Everything needs to be looked at from both ways.
• The By-pass will cause sprawl! Save OUR town square (Cross Lake is a good
example).
• Both need to happen. Welcome new businesses and keep established ones viable.
More businesses mean lower taxes. But citizens still need jobs.
• A healthy job base will go with a healthy business/commercial tax base. (3)
• Develop empty spaces in town. Don't allow any development on bypass.
• Growing the tax base will lead to creating more jobs.
• Commercial property taxes are exorbitant. The burden will shift to residential if
we bypass the town and do not allow commercial expansion.
• Look at the area as a whole (not just Pequot) and see how we can fill the blanks in
each of the surrounding communities by working together!
• Job creation brings in new business into the area, which reduces tax burden for
everyone. Limit government to reduce need for taxes.
• Minimize commercial taxes to create more jobs. More jobs equal more tax
revenue.
• Keep our taxes low!
Investment in Commercial Zoning along the new Highway 371
alignment
With Highway 371 scheduled to be realigned east of the downtown, the City is
evaluating how the property along the alignment should be zoned. It is
currently zoned primarily Agriculture and Forestry. The estimated cost to
provide sewer and water to the east side of the new highway is $1.8 million.
What is your opinion on how the properties should be zoned and developed?
The city should maintain the existing zoning and not extend sewer and water: (33)
The properties should be rezoned to Commercial only if a cost/benefit analysis
`— demonstrates that the extension of sewer and water is justified: (8)
