City of
Pequot
Lakes = _
June 2, 2oi2
Mavor and Citv Council
City of Pequot Lakes
4638 County Road ii
Peauot Lakes. MN 6a2
Re: Sign Ordinance Review
Dear Mayor and City Council,
After the ordinance amendment regarding digital gas price signs was approved earlier this year,
the City Council directed the Planning Commission to review the existing sign ordinance in
denth. The Plannin Commission was asked to determine whether or not chanes to the
ordinance are necessary. Over the past four months, the Planning Commission has invited
business owners, economic development committee members and the general public to pre-
meetin discussions for innut on the existin sin ordinance.
There was input from two local small business owners who felt more signage should be allowed
for home occupations or businesses in the Rural Residential zones. Representatives from the
school district and the chamber of commerce were in favor of allowin diital sinae, off-site,
in order to "enhance communication with students, parents, communiry member and all visitors
to the Pequot Lakes area."
The Planning Commission discussed the desire to keep the rural residential areas of the city just
that; rural and residential. These areas of the City are not meant for large, commercial style
sins or lare commercial businesses. The Plannin Commission was also not in favor of
amending the ordinance to allow digital displays that will negatively impact the character of the
community.
After a thorough review of the sign ordinance, it's been determined that changes are not
recommended at this time. The existing ordinance allows an adequate amount of signage in each
of the Citv's zoning districts. and there are mechanisms in nlace for addressing snecial reauests
for additional signage.
When Dronertv owners are seekine to disulav more signs that what are allowed or allowances
outside of what is allowed in the ordinance, a"sign concept plan" with the request may be
submitted to the Planning Commission. Currently, the application and review process for a sign
concet nlan is the same as for a conditional use uermit. ADOlicants must submit a detailed
application, pay a$45o fee (Commercial Zone), the newspaper must be notified, legal notices
4638 CourrrY Roni> 11 • PFQuor Lnts, MN 56472 •(218) 568-5222 • Frix: (218) 568-5860 • www.pequodakes-mn.gov
