1.4
New fire fighters hired recently are Casey Emans,Jory Carlson, and Eric Olson.Casey and Eric were
previously members of other fire departments and have completed training classes. Our present
roster is now 29 members.
Our Department was awarded an AFG (FEMA)grant this year for$20,400.00 to purchase and install
a new commercial washer and dryer. The dryer is especially designed for fire turnout gear. The
dryer is also capable of drying fire hose.
Our current air mask situation was discussed. We were recently denied our 2014 regional air mask
grant application with other Crow Wing County fire departments.Chief Nelson has budgeted for
purchasing masks for 2016.Total estimated cost is$123,000.00.At this time our air masks recently
passed their performance test. All our air bottles are expired for their average life span. Our options
at this time are leasing to purchase either with a local bank or the manufacturer of the masks.
These plans are limited to a six year term.If the bank program would work, it would be called an
equipment certificate,or basically a loan.Chief Nelson will be getting more information about
leasing from MSA,who manufactures our needed air masks. He will also get information of how an
equipment certificate could be applied. Our current air masks are rated at 2002 standards. New
standards were adopted in 2007 and later in 2014.There is a possibility that if we would reapply for
the AFG grant for air masks after leasing to purchase;the loan could be paid off with a grant. The
2016 fire contracts may have a slight increase to help cover costs. Minneapolis and St.Paul fire
departments have ordered lots of new air masks recently which may help to keep any rising costs in
check. The 2015 AFG grant applications supposed to be acted on in November this year,so there is
a possibility we could still get a grant this year.
All the ISO problems that plagued Pelican Township residents recently should be all taken care of
within six months. There were ISO problems with lots of other areas that have surfaced.
Next meeting will be January 27,2016,at the fire station.
Meeting adjourned by declaration.
