Notes—Pequot Lakes MnDOT Bridge Meeting(CSAH 11 and Paul Bunyan Trail)
May 4, 2015
Present:
• Tony Lesch—MnDOT Bridge Designer
• Melissa Schultz—MnDOT Bridge Designer
• Paul Theide—County Commissioner
• Dave Sjoblad—Mayor
• Jim Hallgren—MnDOT Project Manager
• Sandy Peine—City Clerk
• Dawn Bittner—Zoning Administrator
• Mike Loven—Public Works Supervisor
• Jenna Crawford—Chamber of Commerce
• Wade Miller—DNR Parks and Trails
• Greg Karr—Council Member
• Rob Hall—Crow Wing County Engineer
• Matt Kilian—Chamber of Commerce
• Tim Houle—City Engineer
Tim Houle provided photos of bridges that have been designed by WSN. Melissa presented two bridge
concepts which she designed. The majority of the committee preferred the fieldstone material. Melissa
requested the Committee to generate design and material ideas for MnDOT.
There is no consistency in the Paul Bunyan bridges.
Cost Participation with MnDOT—7%or a maximum of$300,000—this is for aesthetic enhancements
which is anything above the base bridge build.
Melissa showed color samples and noted that blues, yellows, and reds are the most likely to fade.
Darker colors are less likely to show markings.
Bridge maintenance—MnDOT stated painting is required about every 30 years and other than that there
should be no maintenance.
Tim Houle verified with the County that there is no cost maintenance policies on maintenance of county
bridges.
Lighting—There currently are no lights proposed for the bridges, but if lighting is used, the City is
responsible for anything above the MnDOT norm and would be responsible for electrical and
maintenance costs.
A decision must be made by July 1 on the bridge designs; after that there will be time for
branding/personalization items to be added to the bridge.
