Garden plants
.1
Garden 1: Coral bells, hostas, astilbe, and Bergenia. This will be a shady area I believe.
Garden 2: tiger eye sumac, purple leaf wegelia, and little lime punch hydrangeas; on the roadside, to
the left of the above mentioned bushes, I put in another trellis area for either apple trees or grapes
surrounded by lilac bushes and raised garden beds. I believe this would be a sunny area.
Garden 3: berry white hydrangeas, Diablo ninebark bushes, gold smokebush, purple smokebush, miss
Kim lilac bushes, foxy pavement roses, carpet roses, catmint, mums, phlox, Bleeding hearts Heliopsis,
coneflowers, black eye Susan's, Russian Sage, groundcover sedum, beebalm, banana cream daisys,
tidbit firelight hydrangea, Sage, red prince wegelia bushes.
Garden 4: between trees on far end...... trellis for apple trees
Garden 5: tall arborvitaes trees, round arborvitae bushes, invincibelle spirit hydrangeas,
rhododendrons, black eye Susan's, coneflowers, liatris, short beebalm, Japanese grasses, sedum
Garden 6: (100' x 27' approx). bee balm, phlox, daylilys, turtlehead, black eye Susan's, coneflowers,
daisys, sedum, Sage, pink dianthus, forget me nots, geranium groundcover, hardy geranium, short
beebalm, coreopsis, prairie seed grasses, Bergenia, liatris, phlox, catmint, hydrangeas, ninebark, bridal
veil spires, Lily's, drift roses, false sunflower, bleeding hearts Heliopsis.
Many, if not the majority, are havens for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. All are hardy for this
area. Many of these plants are also native to the area such as bee -balm, coneflowers, black eye
Susan's, daisys, some grasses, phlox, sumac, etc. I had to guess as to the amount of sunlight each
area receives and chose plants accordingly.
I also chose plants that would be easy to care for, if the 4-H club will be planting, pruning and caring
for these gardens. Even the hardy roses do not need extra care. The foxy pavement rose is a "Rosa"
bush and will set rose hips in the fall. Rose hips are used in many beauty and medicinal concoctions.
They bloom all season from June until frost. The gardens will have color from spring through fall. You
may want to plant spring bulbs through the gardens as well.
The tiger eye sumac is a beautiful foliage bush which turns color in the fall in shades of oranges, reds,
yellows. However, the one con with this is that if you do not dig in some edging barrier around the
plant, it will spread its roots. Roots are very shallow so the edging need not be deep. It's very easy to
just pull them out as well, or they could be dug up and replanted or sold. If you do not like this idea we
can do a different kind of bush there. This is in garden 2, which would replace the tree line. Because
wanted to lighten up this area I chose the sumac for its lime color, softness, and beautiful foliage all
