Notes from DNR Meeting
St. Cloud
Friday,August 4, 2023
Attached you will find a copy of the power point presentation of Emma Schultz.
Emma.schultz@state.mn.us 651-259-5274
There were 15 attendees: 13 men (most appeared to be Public Works people); myself&a
representative from Davy Tree Service were the women.
Two State programs were addressed: Shade Tree Program Bonding Grants and ReLeaf
Community Forestry grants. Applications are found on the DNR's Community Forest webpage
(mndnr.go/communityforestry)with additional information. Neither of these programs require
any type of matching funding;they are, however, limited to exactly what the funding says. They
will help with the application. Reimbursement to expenses is AFTER the City has paid the bills
(seems to be every six months on what has been paid, approved, &onfirmed).
Look at the page number on the power point handout to follow my notes:
SHADE TREE PROGRAM BONDING GRANTS:
P. 3#3—there are a wide range of people evaluating each application.
#5- you must have an approved signed contract before any work is done! You will NOT get
reimbursed for work done prior to the contract.
#6- as mentioned above, it is a reimbursement process to the City.
The application process turns into a work plan. Be sure to make it real & realistic.
P.4- these are the legal words for the program. Remember, it is a BONDING program so some
other requirements might float through.
P.5 - Reinterated that no matching funds are required and also that having a match from
somewhere(in-kind or donation) does NOT enhance the application.
P. 7.- Be sure to list safety as a priority and reflect on the makeup of your community(looking
for low-income, boulevards)
P. 8 - One of the main goals of this program is to have a diversity of trees.
P. 9. - Staff time NOT covered—they stressed hiring a contraction—but it needs to be one that
has certification.
