Story Time/Library Activities: Terri updated the Board on various activities. Story Time is
scheduled through March and is held on Wednesday mornings at 10:30AM in the Children's
section of the library. Mark posted the event on Facebook to encourage attendance which has
been a concern for those reading volunteers. We currently have 5 volunteers and 2 substitutes.
Bobbin into Town event with "The Hoopsters"was a great success. Well over 100 were in
attendance. We also had about 500"Trick or Treaters"visit the library during the Halloween
Celebration.
Community Education: Joell shared that Defensive Driving Courses were scheduled at the
library. The first one in September was well attended. The second and third were cancelled
due to little attendance and inclement weather. They will continue to utilize our meeting room
for events in the future.
Shannon reported that ECFE has also been meeting on Monday mornings during the past 8
weeks. A commitment by parents to completing the full 8 weeks is difficult due to other
activities, etc. The board also indicated a desire to expand the activities and services in the
children's section of the library.
Joint Discussion with Friends of the Library: Tom Adams shared that the Friends had
purchased the lot behind (west)of the library for future use. A discussion and visioning session
ensued about both the long term and short term use of the lot along with collaborative efforts
with other organizations in the community.
Long term included expansion of the physical facility which would increase the available space
for publication inventory, children's activities, and larger meeting area for the community. The
kitchen could be expanded along with a U shape concept to the west which would allow for a
courtyard as well as outdoor space.
Courtney shared Brainerd Library has a Musical Instrument Park which could be considered her
along with other equipment centered on learning and outdoor activities. Future projects and
programs could be collaborated with Community Education,4-H, Master Gardeners, etc.to
provide an "outdoor" activities based experience with the lot.
It was the consensus of the group that a "Visioning Committee" should be formed to consider
the use of the land and future expansion and programs for the Library. Tom Adams encouraged
this committee to plan at this point of the process with a diminished concern for the cost. It
would allow for a broader visioning process.
