EDC Minutes <br />March 16, 2021 <br />Page 2 of 3 <br />----------------------------- <br /> <br />5. Broadband/Fiber Optic Update <br /> <br /> Commissioner Luebke stated that he is in the process of building a <br />Broadband/Fiber Optic coalition, spinning it off of Heartland Cable Commission <br />but utilizing Region 5. He is currently working Ideal Township, City of Jenkins, <br />Jenkins Township, City of Pequot Lakes, Lakeshore, Breezy Point. <br /> <br />Ms. Duus stated that Shawn Crochet had phoned to let the City of Pequot Lakes <br />know that TDS is planning on laying fiber cable within City of Pequot Lakes, <br />Jenkins, Hackensack, Backus and Breezy Point. <br /> <br />6. School Update <br /> <br /> Chair Lindholm said the School Board had a public hearing for an abatement <br />bond for the expansion and redesign of the Early Childhood parking lot. Business <br />manager and Mr. Lindholm are currently in the process of hiring a demographer <br />to conduct a study regarding student growth/capacity. Winter sports wrapping up <br />and spring sports will be starting soon. Final interviews for Community Director <br />position. <br /> <br /> Commissioner Luebke inquired if the Day of Caring is still being held. Chair <br />Lindholm stated the Day of Caring is on the calendar. <br /> <br /> Commissioner Becklin asked if the School Board will be making any decisions on <br />the Heart of the Good Life ball fields. Mr. Lindholm stated that until the study is <br />conducted, they are not able to make any decisions. <br /> <br />7. Chamber Update <br /> <br /> Katie Wasserman shared that the Chamber has partnered with Nisswa, <br />Crosslake, Cuyuna and Brainerd to write a letter to the Governor regarding a <br />plan for COVID restrictions. There are businesses that are on the brink of closure <br />with not knowing where the restrictions are going. Ms. Wasserman shared that <br />this is her last meeting. The Chamber is in full swing for summer planning. <br /> <br />8. BLAEDC Update <br /> <br />Tyler Glynn stated that the Annual Meeting was a success. BLAEDC received <br />many updates from local and federal governments regarding broadband and <br />COVID relief funding. The next round of government funding has a lot of <br />language regarding broadband (which is also including water and sewer). The <br />county is expecting approximately $12.8 million and cities are expecting funds as <br />well. Mr. Glynn is meeting with the county and will be discussing event’s centers <br />within the county that have not received any COVID funding. There will also be a <br />discussion regarding business and personal property owners. <br />
