■ HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE REGIONAL ECONOMY <br />Fur Trading. • Crow Wing County's <br />~- economy began in the late 17t'' <br />40 <br />i% century as a trading center <br />between the Dakota and <br />Ojibwe Indians and <br />European fur traders. <br />Railroad Maintenance <br />Shop in Brainerd. <br />Railroad- The Northern Pacific Railroad began laying track in 1870 that would <br />connect Duluth (Great Lakes Region) with Puget Sound in Washington State. <br />The company's first headquarters was located in the City of Brainerd but later <br />moved south to St. Paul. Northern Pacific built a major maintenance shop in <br />Brainerd and the company would later be merged into the BNSF Railroad. <br />Y <br />Ri <br />Mining: The railroad opened up the region to national markets and facilitated the growth of the local iron <br />mining industry.
