City Council Minutes
November 3, 2009
ALTERNATE ALIGNMENT. COUNCIL MEMBER SJOBLAD
SECONDED THE MOTION.
Council Member Malecha stated that the cost to extend infrastructure to
the alternate alignment would be very high and would not benefit the city.
Council Member Ryan stated he was opposed to the resolution. He stated
that the highway will be going through many rural segments of property
and the resolution adds salt to the wounds that those property owners
have already suffered. He further stated that this resolution takes away the
highest and best use of the property. Council Member Ryan indicated that
it is not appropriate to tell future Councils what they can and can't do.
Council Member Nagel stated that he has attended many of the Planning
Commission meetings where this issue has been discussed. He further
stated that the push to get this before the Council is from a realtor who
has stated that in the absence of this resolution, investors in and out of
town are wondering what is going to happen to Pequot. He indicated that
this resolution gives everyone a clear picture of where Pequot is going to
go.
Mayor Adams stated that she has heard from a number of business
owners in town who have indicated that the resolution is what is needed.
She noted that the people who invest in Pequot need to know that the
downtown will be the central business area. Mayor Adams indicated that
this resolution supports the businesses.
Scott Pederson, Planning Commission representative, stated that this was
a proactive move by the Planning Commission in an effort to plan for the
future.
MOTION CARRIED 4 -1.
