Dear Sandy, You asked whether any cities in Minnesota or elsewhere are using a four -day work week. In November 2008 we were aware of two cities who had a four -day work week: St. Francis Bayport Cities reportedly considering it are Hanover, Zimmerman, Rogers and Silver Bay. The City of Anoka was using a four -day work week in August of 2008 and was going to be evaluating whether to continue it. The city of Eden Prairie's manager was looking favorably on exploring a four -day work week at that time as well. Just this week I spoke to the Texas Office of the Comptroller who was doing national research on what cities might have used a four -day work week, but I don't know of other states who have tried it on a wide- spread scale. At a 'green expo' conference I attended in January 2009 1 heard the city of St. Francis speak on this as well as a school district (sorry I can't remember which one), but I got the impression that cities have a little more difficulty finding significant savings because there are some departments not suited to the four -day schedule, e.g. public works, and various public safety functions. Also, if all your departments are housed in a single building it can be difficult to realize savings because, e.g. the police department still needs light and heat even if administrative staff is using the shortened work week. On the other hand, the school district realized lots of savings just from the single day of no busing. In the school district example, there was unfavorable community feedback because parents who work suddenly had to make other arrangements for children who would have been in school. In the city case, however, employees really liked the shortened week because of the long weekend and residents liked the expanded hours at city hall on the days it was open.
