early January. Trucks and equipment did not perform well in freezing temps of 20 to 30
degrees below zero. Engine 1's water lines froze at a call with minus 30 degree temps. A
dump tank plastic weaved liner tore during this same call. Electrical power was out of
service so there were no lights at the fire station during an early morning call and service
doors had to be manually opened. One of our tankers stalled when returning to the station
and had to be towed before the water froze. Some minor stress related disagreements
happened between our personnel and other fire fighters helping us during mutual aid. The
good thing was there were no significant injuries or major equipment breakdowns.
The annual fire report was reviewed. Several charts were presented to help us understand
some of the data.
The RIT (rapid intervention training) team was explained to fire board members. We
have seven members who participate with this group. The team's purpose is to provide
well trained personnel to a department during a structure fire incident in case a fire
fighter who has entered a burning structure needs to be rescued. Most departments do not
have enough fire personnel to be able to have back -up man power.
Craig Bartel, representing Poplar Township, explained to the fire board their interest in
contracting with our fire department. They felt they were not being treated fair in their
contract with the Motley Fire Department. The township has provided the data that our
City Clerk needed to give them a quote on the cost of a contract with us. Tom Ryan,
representing the City, explained the concerns city council personnel discussed while -
considering the fire contract request. The City has to make the final decision to approve
Poplar Township's contract. The fire board discussed several ideas and possible conflicts
with providing service to Poplar Township. Littman motioned to approve the contract
with Poplar, McNerney second the motion, motion passed unanimous. The fire board will
recommend the City approve the contract. Other townships may also request a contact.
In other new business, Mayor Weaver informed the board of two detachments the City of
Breezy Point has experienced. The Wild Acres game farm area, which includes all the
Ebnets, will be joining Ideal Township. The other area is the Doug Rach property and
some adjoined neighbors whose properties will become part of Pelican Township. Our
department will lose the contract for the Ideal Township transfer, but will still provide
service to the area joining Pelican Township: This detachment will cause some problems
with road maintenance.
The annual election of fire board officers for 2010 followed. Littman motioned to retain
our present officers, second by Ryan, motion passed. Peterson will remain Chairman and
Benson will remain vice chairman.
Meeting dates for 2010 will be April 28, July 28, October 27, and January 26, 2011.
Please mark your calendars.
McNerney motioned to adjourn, second by Benson, meeting adjourned.
