i
Pequot Lakes Community Library
Minutes of Board of Directors Meetin I
g ,
Tuesday,june 20,2017 I
Board Chair Melissa Birch called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. ''
Board members present: Melissa Birch,Tom Adams, Kay Spizzo and Terri Grimes.
Absent: Kevin Olson, Sara Jane Olson, and Renee Moodie.
Treasurer's Report-Tom Adams
As of June 2017,the library has a combined total of$144,405 in the checking and
Wells Fargo Investment accounts and two "Rainy Day" CDs worth a total of$16,132.
The monies in the Investment account,as well as two additional CDs ($10,000 and
$5,266),are designated as Endowment Funds. These monies were raised by the
Friends of the Pequot Lakes Community Library and are currently held by the City of
Pequot Lakes.
For the January-May 2017 period, the librars revenues and expenditures are
generally as budgeted, though donations are down somewhat for the year thus far.
After some discussion,it was agreed that Tom Adams will request separate line
items in the budget for Summer Reading Program donations and expenditures,as
the library receives multiple donations each year earmarked by the donors for the
Summer Reading Program.
Volunteer Report-Melissa Birch ,
According to volunteer coordinator Nancy Adams, the library currently has
sufficient volunteers for its regular operations, but additional volunteers are needed
to sign up for the annual book sale, scheduled for July 1-3.
Event Coordinator Report-Melissa Birch
The library has had several excellent Legacy Fund programs scheduled by
Kitchigami:Arn Kind's World War I program was attended by the 7graders from
Pequot Lakes Middle School; Lyz Jaakola presented on Anishinaabe music and
culture; and "Z" Mistry and Greg presented stories and music from India with the
summer reading program kids in attendance. There are currently no more on the
schedule,as Kitchigami typically does not arrange Legacy Fund programs during
July and August.
The spring local author event-"Made in Minnesota:A Celebration of Local Authors"
-went well. 25 authors and over 200 members of the public attended; evaluations
filled out by authors indicated that overall they were pleased with the event and
would be interested in participating if we were to host another event. They provided
several helpful suggestions for future events, including making it shorter (3 hours
instead of 5) and having fewer authors but starting with panels, presentations,
and/or readings followed by individual sales.
