WSN works with a traffic consultant that captures traffic count
data via video camera. This not only provides us with raw
traffic counts, but turning movements as well as types of
vehicles passing by any given location. Plus, it can capture
pedestrian movements, driver tendencies, close calls, truck
traffic, etc. that tube counters cannot pick up. This information
will be helpful in assisting the Council in making informed
choices on any potential street adjustments due to the Trailside
Park concepts, what to do with the existing traffic signal, any
changes in Main Street traffic due to the interchange, etc.
Traffic counts on four intersections will cost approximately
$5,000 with an additional $1,000 for each intersection added.
We would then repeat this process and cost in 2018 to pick up
traffic counts and patterns with the opening of the new
Highway alignment. These two data sets can then be analyzed
and the cost of this analysis will be based on what information
the City is looking for.
We are proposing the Council consider obtaining traffic data to
help them make informed choices on upcoming projects and
traffic pattern changes.
Council Action Requested: Council motion authorizing
Widseth Smith Nolting to conduct 2017 and 2018 traffic
studies and analysis at a cost not to exceed $8,000 for each
year.
