Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce
Sixth and Washington Post Office Box 850
Brainerd, Minnesota 56401 Bemidji, Minnesota 56601
'-218-829-2838 218-751-3540
PAUL BUNYAN EXPRESSWAY STEERING COMMITTEE
May 3, 1990
Dear Paul Bunyan Expressway Supporter:
On April 5, 1990, the Paul Bunyan Expressway Steering Committee held a
luncheon meeting in Hackensack at Jimmy ' s Restaurant . The meeting was
very well attended by interested individuals from Bemidji to Brainerd
along U.S . Highway 371. This le er ,:-serve as the minutes from
that meeting.
Rich Siegert , Chairman of r• • ` orr e 'coordinated the
meeting. He reviewed the s o . - +°' 4bs. ° , ,=the ,Paul Bunyan
Expressway and discussed th ,S 4:rnta s' arm.: B4.zinerd by-pass and
the schedule for constructio bet'i n em dji ;a: - s Lake .
It was noted that there is a perception from manyaco Unities that there
will be either a by-pass around every community or a- lane highway
going through. Therefore , the needy°for this meet ing ^,nd 'to get support
at the grass roots level through education'a tw'h t the Paul Bunyan
Expressway really means . Then, to get commitments from communities not
-already on record for supporting it
The expressway concept should be supported and promoted before any
improvements are began. With the support of the Various communities, a
none funding bill designating U. S . Highway 371 from Litt le Falls to
Bemidji as the Paul Bunyan Expressway could be _troduced into the
legislature next year with a small amount of dolars for signage .
One concern discussed was how tax dollars would be allocated toward
roadway improvements . The question of why a 4-lane in some areas while
many rural township roads are still dirt . Also discussed were weight
limitations on certain kinds or roaas .
Two factors of major concern and concensus were safety and redistricting.
It was stated that the tourism industry and logging industry are headed
for a crash due to the road conditions and traffic from both.
Redistricting will shift the vote and possibly dollars to the metro area. 1
For a project such as this , we should be speaking as one voice .
At the end of the meeting, it was decided that all the units of local
government represented at the meeting should consider passing resolutions
in favor of the concept of the Paul Bunyan Expressway and adoption of the
name . A sample resolution, minutes from the meeting and a copy of the
article to be in the Pilot-Independent should be sent to all of those in
attendance .
■..
