The Board received a letter from T'he City of Breezy Point informing us that they recently
experienced a tax appeal that has significantly affects their taxable value for 2010 and
2011. The result of this is the city will collect $117,782.00 less anticipated tax revenue in
2011. This loss impacts fire contract costs and they would like some credit allowed for
future contract amounts based on past valuations. Bartels motioned the fire board
determine, as best we can, the actual impact on each area of our fire district contract
costs. The motion was second by McNemey and passed by a unanimous vote. The board
plan will be to have the Pequot Lakes office provide us with a report that shows the
fmancial affect to each member of our contracted area. This will be reviewed at our next
meeting in July.
McNerney, Dubay, and Donovan reported to the board some information they acquired
from recent township seminars. One plan for fire contract cost determination was to use
all building values, including tax exempt properties, which would be fair to all members
of a fire contract district. Presently, we use only building values of taxable properties.
Another issue of awareness for townships was the fact that fire contract providers often
demand fees for services to for large expenditures, such as new equipment or
apparatuses, and provide no financial information of who pays what. Donovan reported
his township contracts with three different fire departments that provide a difFerent level
of service. All three township members commended the City of Pequot Lakes and our
fire department for exceptional service and good communications.
Dubay asked how important the hiring of a new Pequot Lakes police chief is to our fire
department. Chief Nelson replied that the police and fire departments work together
during many types of situations and it is very important that we get along with each other
and have respect for each other. This cooperation will benefit both departments and the
service provided to citizens. Another issue was should our fire fighters be required to be
first responders? Chief Nelson replied that due to our Police department being
responders, the zone 3 first responders group in the Pequot Lakes area, the presence of
North ambulance in the City, and fue personnel's schedules already saturated with
training, we should not get involved. The fire board felt that the new police chief should
be trained for medical needs in our area.
Benson commended our department for a job well done during a recent structure fire in
Moose Lake Township.
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, July 27`, at 7 pm at Pequot Lakes fire station.
Benson motioned to adjourn, second by Rudberg, meeting adjourned.
