`.. February 6, 2008
Pequot Lakes Park Board
Mayor Cathy Malecha
Thanks for all that you do for the City of Pequot Lakes.
Thanks to Cathy Malecha for her January 31 LAKE COUNTRY ECHO
event planning article, arriving at the same time as the winter edition of the
INITIATIVE QUARTERLY MAGAZINE.* Have you read the attached
article? Don't you agree that many of the ideas could be applied by each of
us in our person lives (set an example!) and in our community (set a
challenge!)? Your development of the parks, gazebo, American Legion
memorial, benches, lighted pathways, picnic shelter, Dru's Garden, etc. is
remarkable. Everything is positive for walking and its healthy benefits.
Many of the tips are connected to traffic and streets. Pequot Lakes streets
should respect pedestrians and cyclists. Snow, debris, and potholes need
immediate attention. School children should be able to walk to school
safely. Budgets, scheduling, and weather play a big part in MNDOT and
Crow Wing County painting stripes, adjusting cross walk signals, making
signals easy to reach. However, such safety measures must be kept in good
repair. The Pequot Lakes police department has similar constraints on how
much time to allot to vehicle/pedestrian movement and personal safety. But
their presence around town can be a positive influence on everyone's
behavior.
Parking areas could be striped and identified with signage to encourage
shoppers, diners, and business people to leave their vehicles in a safe spot.
Parking adjacent to the Cole Building, the Chamber, and the Paul Bunyan
Trail serves many numbers of vehicles and is much easier to maneuver in
and out of than on busy Cty. Rd. 11 and in front of the post office!
Can we encourage residents to use the ISD 186 van and the Crow Wing
County bus?
Suggestion#10 mentions a "walkability tour"; could this be done at the time
.. the Chamber members do their annual spring walk-about?
