• A community evaluation is available on the website to understand what Pequot Lakes is
lacking.
• Sue will take this information to the Park & Rec board and city to ask for more bike racks, a
city trail to connect from Wild Acres to the Paul Bunyan Trail, and a crosswalk at the Lake
Street / Hwy 371 intersection.
• Kathy Moore recommended checking into a Legacy Amendment Grant.
12. Main Street Program Ideas for Pequot Lakes —Sue Galligan
• Sue attended a Main Street training seminar in August in Red Wing.
• There are 4 official Main Street cities in Minnesota. Brainerd and Red Wing are two of them.
• Pequot Lakes isn't large enough to become an official Main Street, but there are a lot of
information/ideas that can be useful and implemented to help the city and businesses.
• The Main Street program has a four point approach: Organization (building partnerships
within the business district, city, volunteers, and community), Promotion (create a positive
image that will rekindle community pride and improve consumer/investor confidence),
Design (getting the business district into top physical shape and creating a safe and inviting
environment for shoppers, workers, and visitors), Economic Restructuring (retain and
expand successful businesses to provide a balanced commercial mix).
• The Main Street program has eight principles to be successful with the four point
approach: Comprehensive (no single focus), Incremental (change has to be planned and
baby steps), Self-Help (no one else will save our businesses), Partnerships (public and
private), Identifying and Capitalizing on Existing Assets (capitalize on the assets that
make Pequot Lakes unique), Quality (applies to all aspects)
• Sue would like to discuss this information with the Pequot Lakes Advisory Committee, EDC,
and Business Connect.
13.
