is coordinated through Crow Wing County. The program started in the southern section
of the state and is beginning in the north sections. We lcnow there will be a new
communication tower erected near Pequot Lakes, which should help our radio
performance. The plan is for the County to pay 80% of the cost for each group. We will
have to pay 20% of the cost for the department. Completion of the project will take a long
time. The new radio system will not allow for paging, so we have to use our old system
or some other type of paging, possibly cell phones.
The 2010 annual fire report was discussed. Only 6 calls out of 56 are used for the fair
share analysis in computing fire contract costs. There were 56 fire cails for 201.
Training totaled 69 hours. A list of the current fire fighters was also in the report. Both
fire fighters who resigned during the year were from the Breezy area.
The 2011 fire budget was reviewed. The wages budget is probably too high, but if we
have more calls, we will need a cushion. The department is also planning to provide a
wage for our Assistant Chiefs for 2011.
We have been notified by Byron Township that they are interested in contracting with us
for fire protection. They are next to Poplar Township in Cass County. They are closer to
Motley, Pillaer, and Staples than they are to us. They do not have first responder service
available. The department thought we should establish a minimum contract fee of
$2200.00 per year. Donovan motioned to offer Byron Township a contract for $2200.00
per year, second by McNerney, motion failed to pass. Moose Lake and Poplar Townships
approved the motion, all ather areas declined. The main reasons for not offering a
contract were they are too far away, we do not offer first responder services, and we
know we could not provide service to meet their expectations.
Donovan informed the Board that Mission Township will be providing service to the
north end of Pelican Township.
Questions were asked if the fire department would be providing fust responder service to
our fire area. Chief Nelson informed the Board a first responder group is in place in our
area and is currently reorganizing and tra.ining new members, with a new President in
comrnand. Our fire fighters who are members of the first responders, have lost interest
because ot.u police department personnel and the ambulance crews usually are first to
arrive to an incident. Another drawback, for first responders, is the fact they are not
covered by insurance or reimbursed for services.
Election of Officers for 2011 followed. Our present Ocers were asked if they were
willing to serve another term. Littman motioned our Officers be reinstated, second by
Bartels, motion passed.
Meeting dates for 2011 will be April 27, July 27, October 26, and January 25, 2012.
Mark your calendars.
Donovan motioned to adjourn, second by Benson, meeting adjourned.
--
