RECREATION ACTION PLAN
Intent
To maintain adequate public and private facilities,as well as a land and water
base, for diverse quality outdoor recreation for all socioeconomic levels.
Background
The City of Pequot Lakes has a variety of recreation amenities, whether it is the
variety of water bodies within city boundaries or through use of public and
private facilities. Outdoor recreation is a reason many residents have chosen to
reside in this part of the Central Lakes Region,so preserving and enhancing
opportunities is a high priority in continuing the current standard of living for
residents.
Lakes and wetlands are community assets and act as scenic spots for the
enjoyment of residents and visitors, however these bodies of water also benefit
Pequot Lakes greatly by providing opportunities for more action-oriented
recreation. Within city boundaries,Pequot Lakes houses primarily five
recreational lakes:Sibley,Mayo,East Twin,West Twin,and most of Middle
Cullen. Additionally, wetlands make up ???percent of land uses. Since
development is prohibited on many wetland areas, these pieces of land are ideal
`.. places for light outdoor recreation such as winter trails, birding areas,or for open
space amusement.
Lakes are true public open space, yet
not all lakes in the City have public
water access for recreation. Virtually
all lakeshore property in Pequot Lakes
is privately owned for residential use;
this makes it difficult for other
residents or visitors to use the water
resource. Of the major lakes in the
City,none are home to resorts
registered with the Brainerd Lakes
Area Development Corporation. The
closest resorts are located on Lower
Cullen and Upper Cullen,neither of
which benefits the tax base of Pequot.
Additionally, not a single beach is available for public use in Pequot Lakes.
Considering the amount of lakeshore in city limits,a beach could act to diversify
recreation opportunities during warm months.
1
