FCC: Federal Communications Commission. The Federal Communications Commission <br /> regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and <br /> cable in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. It was established by the <br /> Communications Act of 1934 and operates as an independent U.S. government agency <br /> overseen by Congress. <br /> FTTH or FTTP: Fiber to the Home or Fiber to the Premise. A form of fiber optic communication <br /> delivery in which an optical fiber is nun from the central office all the way to the premises <br /> occupied by the subscriber. <br /> Gbps: Gigabit per second. Used to measure data transfer speeds of very high bandwidth <br /> connections. One Gbps equals 1000 Mbps or one million kbps. <br /> GPON: Gigabit Passive Optical Network. GPON is one method of providing fiber to the home <br /> and is a point-to-multipoint access mechanism that enables one fiber from the provider's central <br /> office to serve multiple homes. GPON has a downstream capacity of 2.4888 Gbps and an <br /> upstream capacity of 1.244 Gbps that is shared among users. Each user's data is kept secure <br /> and private through encryption. <br /> HD: High Definition. High definition television is digital broadcasting television system where the <br /> broadcast transmits in widescreen pictures with more detail and quality than found in analog <br /> television or other digital television formats. <br /> IOS: iOS is an operating system that can be found in mobile phones and tablets. It was <br /> developed by Apple and is not licensed for installation on non-Apple hardware. <br /> IPTV: Internet Protocol Television. IPTV is the delivery of television services over a packet <br /> switched network. IPTV differs from Internet television in that it has an ongoing standardization <br /> process and involves preferred delivery with set top boxes or other customer premise <br /> equipment. <br /> ITU: International Telecommunication Union. ITU is the specialized agency of the United <br /> Nations which is responsible for information and communication technologies. <br /> Kbps: Kilobits per second. Used to measure the data rate of a computer network connection. <br /> 1 kbps is equal to 1000 bits per second. <br /> LOGIS: Local Government Information Systems (LOGIS) is a joint powers, intergovernmental <br /> consortium of Minnesota local government units. The mission of LOGIS is to"Facilitate leading- <br /> edge, effective and adaptable public sector technology solutions through the sharing of ideas, <br /> risks, and resources in a member-driven consortium." <br /> Mbps: Megabits per second. Used to measure data transfer speeds of high bandwidth <br /> connections. <br /> One Mbps equals 1000 kbps. <br /> NTIA: National Telecommunications and Information Administration. NTIA is located within the <br /> U.S. Department of Commerce, is the Executive Branch agency that is principally responsible <br /> by law for advising the President on telecommunications and information policy issues. NTIA's <br /> programs and policymaking focus largely on expanding broadband Internet access and <br /> adoption in America, expanding the use of spedru i by all users, and ensuring that the Internet <br /> et <br /> remains an engine for continued innovation and economic growth. NTIA oversees the State <br /> Broadband Initiative, which are the state entities collecting data to create the National <br /> Broadband Map. NTIA also awarded the BTOP grants. <br /> `'" 55 <br />
