City Council Minutes
July 23, 2013
-----------------------------

Mayor Adams closed the public hearing.
Council Member Gardner stated that he agrees with Mayor Adams that we
are one City. In considering the phase-in, he is looking at this from all
perspectives. He stated that a one year phase-in would be a tax burden
for some and he is trying to be fair to all. Council Member Gardner noted
that we all need to move forward and be one City no matter what the
outcome.
Council Member Pederson stated that the City Council reduced the levy
last year and they continue to work hard to keep the taxes as low as
possible. He noted that he lives in the former Sibley Township and he
knows what it feels like to have tax increases. A lot of thought was given
when the merger occurred and the Pequot properties in the old city saw
City tax decreases. Council Member Pederson stated that bearing the tax
burden is everyone's burden and that decisions are based on what is good
for the community.
Council Member Sjoblad stated that he has no disagreements that this
phase-in needs to be done, but it needs to be fair.

Council Member Akerson had no comment.
Mayor Adams stated that no decision by the City Council will be made
tonight. This issue will be discussed at the August 6th City Council
Meeting. Mayor Adams stated that there is no doubt that this tax
differential needs to be corrected but in a fair way. She thanked everyone
for coming to the meeting.
3. Adjournment
The special meeting of the City Council adjourned at 7:18 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
  `i/a2C°J
Nancy Malecha
Finance Administrator/Deputy City Clerk
.
