The uncertainty was a killer for economic development
v. There has been more interest in commercial development in the
past year than in the past 20 years
vi. Project was a$20mm project in Staples. Bulk of the project paid
by Mn/DOT in federal or state funds and$1.6mm for local funds.
vii. ADT is 11,500 in Staples.
k. Funding—tactical advice:
i. $2.5mm for local construction projects from federal funds annually
ii. The county and Oberstar need municipal consent from the
communities before considering an application for special project
funds.
iii. If we want the funds, you need to be at the table—showing up with
a project. You have to show community support from the local
units of government. Stress safety component in applications. Fill
out the form properly. Most high priority projects have shown
broad support by the communities.
iv. Consider coalition meetings for corridors to continue support for
the projects. Region 5 is happy to coordinate those meetings.
v. Go for the maximum amount of federal request because this will
be the last year that the Congressman will be chair.
vi. Process—applications are vetted by legislative staff in DC,then to
transportation committee and staff. Then a group of applications
are selected and presented.
