7b. Discussion on Commercial Buildings
A building fagade for a pedestrian environment is going to be narrower and designed at a different scale
than a fagade for structures built for an auto-dominated environment.
To make this point, consider the two extremes. A pedestrian-only environment designed with an
enhanced pedestrian reality using forced perspective to make buildings feel taller and narrower would
be Main Street at Disneyland. Notice how the storefronts, sidewalks, street lighting, signage and
vegetation are all scaled to be attractive and accessible to pedestrians.
Y
The other extreme would be an environment designed only for vehicles, such as a loading dock. There is
no pedestrian space here as obviously everything, including the building access, is designed at a scale to
be accessed only by a vehicle.
__ 1 Page
