Excerpt from July 1, 2008, City Council Minutes
5.1. Economic Development Committee Update
Ed Larsen updated the Council on the progress of the Economic
Development Committee. He indicated that the present project has been
to consider the future of the existing business park and look at a possible
expansion of the park. He stated that the committee has studied the long
term future expansion of the park and have concluded that best alternative
is to use the existing spray irrigation field for a future business park. He
noted that the topography is good and the land will be accessible which
ever direction the highway goes. Ed further stated that it is the
recommendation of the Economic Development Committee that the City
Council complete a facilities study for the long term direction of the
wastewater treatment facility. He indicated that the Economic
Development Committee does not believe the irrigation field is highest and
best use of the property. He noted that for the short term, the committee is
recommending that the City look at existing vacant lots in the park that are
privately owned. The Committee has discussed the size of existing lots
and fact that many of the lots could be smaller based on existing
businesses in the park. Ed noted that the Planning Commission will be
considering amendments to the City's Ordinance regarding lot size and
regulations in the business park.
Ed stated that the Economic Development Committee is requesting the
Council to authorize them to move forward with the existing business park
study and when the facilities plan is completed the committee will then
work on a plan for a future business park. He noted that in the meantime
the Committee will continue to work on other projects.
Council Member Ryan expressed his concern that expansion of the
wastewater treatment facility should be demand driven. He noted that it is
an expensive proposition to expand industrial park into the irrigation field.
Council Member Nagel indicated he would like to see the Economic
Development Committee explore how to help existing businesses.
